Thought experiment: If we made people pay for what they use -- which would include surgeries, drugs, talk therapies, and so on -- what percentage of the things you're worried about would simply disappear?
That is, how much of this is directly related to the fact that anything pay for with taxes must necessarily become political in nature, to ultimately be controlled by the people who are best at playing and winning political games, who are necessarily the people whose behavior is constrained by the fewest principles?
If we stop paying for the game, they have to stop playing it. And if we keep paying for it, they win. It's really that simple.
